Ceramic is a general term that refers to all fired clay. Porcelain is a specific kind of clay that is very fine in texture and withstands higher heat in the firing process.

One way to tell a low fire clay from a high fire clay like porcelain is by the sound it makes the higher fire clay with have a higher pitch ring when tapped. You can often see the finer texture in a porcelain clay.
