The easier clay pipe to make is a clay bowl that can easily be pinched to shape and a short stem applied to the side with a rod used to make a hole through the stem into the bowl and a socket opened to receive the long stem. It is then dried and fired. Then a wood or amber mouthpiece and long stem is drilled and carved to fit in the socket.
It is possible to make a long stemmed all clay pipe, but it is a lot trickier because of the long hollow tube.
