How do I clean a ceramic bird nest holder?

The house I am renting has several ceramic bird nests in the yard. They are choked with old nesting materials and have no way to open them. How do I clean them so birds can use them?

    An old soft brush or something similar that is not abrasive rinse well making sure you get all.
