Braeg Heneffe asked:

The reason why ceramic hobs are easy to clean is that they have a smooth and flat surface that allows you to access it easily. Some of the models featured in the Neff ceramic hob range are available with a ‘Point and Twist’ control for easier access. It controls the hob with a magnetic dial, which is removable. When removed, the magnetic dial leaves a surface that is easier to wipe clean. This helps to keep the hob neat and clutter free for a tidy kitchen.

There are five finishes available in the range of Neff ceramic hobs: Stainless steel, black trim, white trim, brown trim and frameless. Ceramic hobs can generally be bought as separate pieces or combined with other styles of hob depending on what is most suitable for an individual household. A lot of people do prefer a gas hob, which can sometimes be more effective than a ceramic hob, but a gas hob is not as easy to clean and does not look as neat.

If you were to go for a ceramic hob, there are six series of Neff ceramic hobs to choose from and they range from having very basic features such as in the Series 1 hobs, to top of the range hobs for more serious cooks and chefs, in the Series 6 range. The Series 6 Extra Wide Ceramic Hob T1683 is an 80cm four zone ceramic hob. Three of the four zones are dual zones and one is extendable, but all four cooking zones have their own LED display, LED timer with a switch off function and are Quicklight so a meal can get underway quickly.

This ceramic hob also has a memory function and a timer, but not all the series have this. The child safety lock and the safety cut out facility that come with the Series 6 hob are there to put minds at ease in a family home with children. Most of the new ceramic hobs have front controls so that if you are left handed, or find it difficult to reach, they should be easier to use. All the ceramic touch controls are found at the front of the hob.

This Series 6 Neff ceramic hob has Piezo sensitive touch control and won a prestigious Red Dot International Design Award for product design in 2004. The Red Dot Design Awards attract entries from over forty countries globally and are held every year.

The downside to the Neff ceramic hob units is that they have been specially designed to complement Neff ovens in their styling and functionality. There are color trimmed models available to match other appliances within the Neff range and there are new frameless models for a sleek appearance. Neff also designs hobs with oval knobs to match Neff ovens or versions which blend in naturally with the worktops. This is really good if you already have a Neff oven and other Neff appliances, but not so good if you just want to change the hob. However, the frameless option of Neff ceramic hob would suit just about any kitchen style and fit in with most appliances that are already present in your kitchen.

Gee W asked:

We’ve got a bunch of figurines here (some are hollow houses, but the rest are completely solid, painted miniatures) and they don’t have labels describing if they are porcelain or ceramic.

We want to list them on eBay, but don’t know how to describe them.

Please tell us how to tell the difference between porcelain and ceramic miniatures.

Also, is it okay to wash them? They’re fairly dirty…

Thanks!

When one mentions a ceramic filter to them, one would either see images of water filters, electric filters or perhaps not have a clue about what it is. These are used to filter out all of the pathogens and dust from the exhaust gases. Filtration such as ceramic filters are cost effective and efficient in removing the particle that are at high risk of being released into the atmosphere. Ceramic filters are also long lasting and hardwearing; therefore, they can withstand high amounts of heat.

Using ceramic filter in hot gas flumes have proven to show better resistance against thermal shock, which is useful for industries and factories. These need relatively low amounts of maintenance; the best way to keep them clean is to use dry scrubbing to get rid of the acid gases. This is done using lime and bicarbonate of soda; this prevents erosion of the filters and keeps it strong in intense high temperatures. This also helps in the removal of dust particles from the filters.

Furthermore, ceramic filters have been proven to withstand high amounts of heat and pressure without the problems of corrosion. Different makes of ceramic filters vary in quality, with the majority of the filters available in different sizes and coming with sorbent powders for dry scrubbing. The filters often hang vertically within the vessel, which helps to capture the dust particles on the outer surface. The flow of the hot gas determines where the dust particles are captured.

Keeping them in a vertical position makes it easier to separate the dirty compartments with the clean ones. The gas flow moves back and forth in between the filters, with short interval flows moving at a pulsating motion. The backwards motion ensures that the dust particles are removed from the outer surface and fall into a separate hopper section where they are released. When they are cleaned, the cake layers are removed but not uniformly and can look patchy in places on the ceramic filter.

How much the ceramic filter can take is purely based on the amount of filter elements within the vessel, so this will need to be measured before fitting in new filters. It is easy to mistake the size of the filter needed, therefore, making a record of the level of elements in the vessel or an approximate estimation will help with finding the right size. Bear in mind that the ceramic filters are durable and strong under extreme temperatures and during incineration processes.

Even though the ceramic material preparation involves complex manufacturing process and is costlier of all the sealing stuffs used, that could be glass, simple epoxy, rubber seals etc, but ceramics has its own advantage reason is to why being preferred for the sealing of materials, used in typical applications.

To name the few typical applications are:-

Typically metal to ceramic assembly requires ceramic seals; this assembly is used in various capacitors, refractory, Implantable electronic devices, Aerospace applications, feedthroughs etc.

Reason as to why ceramics is preferred is use of ceramic seals in the conditions where glass seals fail the high performance requirement.

Ceramic is ideal for Aerospace applications as it resisting thermal and mechanical shocks, and give excellent resistance against corrosion.

Another application for which its biocompatibility is highly desirable is medical implants, and therefore ceramics is being preferred for its tough resistance against acids and alkalis.

Not least in laser applications where dielectric properties are highly desirable against high voltage and high current.

Ceramic-to-metal seals are also recommended for the extreme high and low temperature conditions, as ceramic gives strong sealing and resistance in harsh conditions, even better than glass seals.

Another reason for its being preferred over glass is that ceramics acts as an insulator at extreme temperature, and thermal shocks where glass normally starts acting as conductor.

Ceramics does not fracture and have high mechanical strength against vibrations and loads.

Ceramics also shows excellent acid and alkaline resistance, which is required feature for medical implants.

Aerospace application uses mettalized ceramics for its ability to stand against high temperature, vibrations, and mechanical shocks.

Many other applications are using its high resistance and insulation property in their assemblies.

Kristy Klien asked:

The hair is one’s crown of beauty and identity. No wonder than through the ages, people have invented, developed, and improved all kinds of ways, techniques, and products to beautify and maintain their hair.

Style? You can, for example, choose Mohawks, undercuts, or bobcats. Color? You can select blond, black, or brown and even more unusual ones, such as, yellow or red. Setting products? There are an endless variety of waxes, oils, and other chemicals that can actually change hair structure.

One of the more advanced developments for hairstyling is the invention of electric hairstyling appliances. With these appliances, one can dry, curl, or straighten hair more easily, more conveniently, and more fun than having to go to a salon and spend a significant amount of money.

One of most common hairstyling appliances is the hair dryer. A hair dryer blows a jet of air that is heated by a set of nichrome wires. The hot air then assists in drying and styling one’s hair.

There are many kinds of hair dryers in the market today. Aside from conventional dryers, there are new ones such as a ceramic hair dryer.

One of the more advanced types, a ceramic hair dryer works like a conventional one wherein a standard rope heater heats the perimeter of the airflow. But with the addition of a ceramic heater, this advanced type of dryer allows a more even distribution of heat. This even distribution help prevent hot spots and hair damage while using the blower to dry or style one’s hair.

The ceramic heater is also self-regulating, that is, it turns down when the surrounding temperature becomes too hot. Because the dryer automatically regulates the temperature, most of these types do not have multiple temperature controls although they do have a high and low setting.

It is also alleged that ceramic dryers help prevent bacteria formation, which results in a much healthier scalp. Using a ceramic dryer also helps the hair resist the effects of adverse weather conditions (e.g., extreme sunlight, rain, wind, and dust), helps create a radiant texture and surface on one’s hair.

For women who regularly blow dry their hair, a ceramic dryer is probably their best choice. Here are some of the best hair dryers in the market today:

1. Chi Turbo Driver - This ceramic dryer uses high-grade ceramic coils. It is also famous in the market because of its low electromagnetic field, an unusual feature since dryers usually have considerably high levels of electromagnetism. It runs on 1500 watts of power, but despite being a little bit low in that aspect, it can compete favorably against higher powered ceramic hair dryers.

2. Twin Turbo Ceramic Ionic 3200 - With a tag of $200, this dryer combines the effects of ceramic and negative-ion technology, allowing the heat inside the hair shaft to radiate without drying the shaft out. The dryer also features four temperature settings, cold-air switch, two speed settings, and an anti-overheating safety device.

3. Conair Ceramic Smooth - This very affordable ceramic dryer (only around $30) has both a conventional and ceramic heater. It is a good travel companion since it can fold up and can run on either 110 or 220 volts. It is quite powerful for its small size; it runs at 1875 watts.
