I’m looking for any type of mold with which I could create a 3-D rhino (not a plate; a sculpture) out of clay–either “true clay” (that you fire in a kiln) or polymer clay (like Sculpey). I’m NOT looking for sculptures themselves. Thanks!

Advanced Ceramics Industry Forecasts report ( http://www.bharatbook.com/Market-Research-Reports/Advanced-Ceramics-Industry-Forecasts-to-2012-and-2017.html )

presents historical demand data (1997, 2002 and 2007) plus forecasts for 2012 and 2017 in current dollars by product, type and market.

Demand for advanced ceramics in the United States is forecast to increase 4.0 percent per year to over $12 billion in 2012. Gains will benefit as advanced ceramics continue to penetrate several applications — such as capacitors, cutting tools, joint implants and membranes — where ceramics are valued for their favorable performance

 characteristics.

The use of advanced ceramics is highly dependent on the health of the electronic component and electrical equipment industries, which combined accounted for 43 percent of total demand in 2007. Opportunities in the electronic components industry will arise due to material substitution, as ceramics gain use over alternatives, as in the case with some capacitors. However, the electronic components industry is projected to remain sluggish, limiting further advanced ceramics demand. The electrical equipment market is sizeable but relatively mature with a comparatively low level of new product development. After experiencing significant gains during the 2002 to 2007 period, electrical equipment output will post a marked deceleration through 2012, restricting advanced ceramics demand for items such as insulators.

Medical markets to offer good opportunities

The chemical and plastic, environmental, industrial machinery and medical product markets will post above-average gains. Ceramics will find greater use in the chemical and plastic market, with the most growth arising from membranes. In this application, growth will accrue due to ceramic’s performance advantages such as toleration of high temperatures and harsh chemicals that boosts gains for ceramic membranes in markets with more difficult processing conditions. Demand will also be driven by greater penetration into specialty applications such as natural gas purification. Interest in reducing the country’s dependence on foreign oil will provide opportunities for advanced ceramics in the environmental market. Emerging applications include the use of ceramic bearings in wind turbines.

Ceramics continue to gain use in various industrial machinery applications, such as cutting tools, as end users realize the performance advantages of these materials.

Limiting further gains will be a deceleration in the industrial machinery industry. In the medical product market, gains will derive from the increasing utilization of ceramics in joint implants and dental procedures. Demographic trends will also provide opportunities, as older individuals tend to require more joint replacements or dental work. In joint replacement, ceramics are valued because they are chemically inert, promote tissue and bone growth, and are not susceptible to attack by the body’s immune system. In dental applications, ceramics are valued for their opalescent color and translucence.

You don’t need to have a twenty-year experience to installing ceramic wall tile in your bathroom. A little patience and dedication will get you a long way when installing that dream ceramic tile bathroom wall you’ve always wanted to have.

Before anything else, gather your tiling tools together. You will need the following tools for this project: A tape measure, a tile cutter and a pair of tile nippers and a pair of pliers, tile spacers, sandpaper, a trowel (preferably notched) and a rubber grout float. To install ceramic wall tile on your bathroom walls properly, you will also need a strong setting material like tiling thinset mortar, or any of a wide selection of tile adhesives. You will also need tiling grout for filling in the gaps between your tiles. Make sure to match your setting material color with your grout.

Also prepare buckets, sponges and rags to clean your tiles of excess grout and other debris, after you’re all done. And don’t start to install ceramic wall tile without these essentials: You will also need a pair of safety glasses, heavy leather gloves, and long-sleeved work clothes (broken shards, and other debris can cause nasty cuts, if you are not careful). Ready to start on your dream ceramic bathroom wall? Follow the tiling instructions below and make your ceramic tiled bathroom wall and start tiling!

You can begin by finding the center of your wall. Use a carpenter’s level, or long pieces of plumb to mark intersecting vertical and horizontal lines. These will be your reference lines for your tiling work. Where both lines intersect is the starting point for your first row of ceramic tiles. From that point, you may then be able to working your way to both ends of your bathroom wall. Make regular checks when you install ceramic wall tile, so that your tiling work is consistent and does run up or down in a slanting direction.

There are two types of bathroom walls you may be working on. One is the common concrete wall, and the other is a special type of called a green drywall. A green drywall is specifically designed for use in bathrooms and showers because it is designed to resist moisture intrusion. Be sure that you clean your walls of dust and debris, as well as repair cracks and fill in gaps and holes. Roughen up or scarify your wall so that your tiling mortar has some grip for bonding. That way, when you begin to install ceramic wall tile on your walls, you won’t have a problem with your tiling mortar or bonding material.

After laying out your wall, you may now begin to your install ceramic wall tile. Start at your reference lines’ intersection point. Apply a coat of tiling thinset mortar. Place your tile over it and press the tile down firmly in place. Give it a twisting motion to set it in place. Stop pressing when you feel your tile has set and is no longer wobbly. Duplicate this procedure with the rest of your ceramic tiles. To get a consistent tiling, place tile spacers on all the spaces between your ceramic bathroom tiles. Don’t forget to check your work every now and then.

When you reach the end of your row, the space left may not be enough for the full size of your ceramic tiles. Use a tile cutter to get your tile under the right size. Then, smoothen the cut edge with sandpaper. Be careful: The edge of a cut ceramic bathroom tile is very sharp. For irregular, use your tile nippers. First draw an outline of the irregular and etch a line alonng it. Then, use your tile nipper to break off the unuseable edges, until you have required shape. Do this a little at a time, so you can control your tile nipping. Don’t forget to sand the edges over.

Leave the tiles to settle overnight, at the very least, or twenty-four hours, at the most. After this setting period, it’s time to lay in your grout. There are two main kinds of grout: Sanded or unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a mixture of cement, water and fine sand. Unsanded grout is any of a wide selection of polymer-based and epoxy resin adhesive grout used to install ceramic wall tile. If your tile spaces are more than an eighth of an inch wide, use sanded grout. For smaller tile spaces, use unsanded grout. Start by map out your bathroom wall and work one section at a time. To maximize your grout application, angle your rubber grout float and press down firmly as you spread it over the tile spaces. Check for pockets of air. Dab these spaces with more grout lining by using the edges of your grout float. Use a damp sponge to wipe off any excess grout. Rinse your sponge regularly so you can get a cleaner and better finish. Let your grout dry for a day and then take a dry piece of cloth and clean and buff your tiles.

Now you’re done! Follow these instruction on how install ceramic wall tile, and don’t forget that ceramic tiling takes some dedication and patience. Take your time and don’t rush your work. When you install ceramic wall tile, the key is consistency and patience. Ceramic tiles that have been rushed will ruin your bathroom’s overall look. A bathroom wall with ceramic tiles that run in haphazard inconsistent zigzag lines is not a beautiful thing to look at. And worse, it would only mean that you lack enthusiasm for what you’re doing and that you haven’t given it your effort.

Raring to start working on your own ceramic floor tile project? Get ready to learn the basics of how to lay ceramic floor tile right here and make that beautiful ceramic tile floor that you and your family have always wanted! So, get your tiling tools ready, put on your safety goggles and let’s do some tiling!

Most tiling jobs start with a well-prepared subfloor. As you learn more about how to lay ceramic floor tile, you will find out about the three general types of floors that tile installers may often work with. Such information will help you alot along the way.

Generally, you will encounter three types of subfloors: Vinyl, plywood, and the concrete floors. Installing ceramic tile directly to vinyl or linoleum floors (or subfloor surfaces) should be avoided at all cost. Your vinyl or linoleum flooring may contain asbestos fibers and should be tested first before you try removing it. If your vinyl floor covering does not contain asbestos fibers, a general recommendation on how to lay ceramic floor tile is to rough-sand, or scarify, the vinyl floor surface to provide your tiling mortar a better grip. Use a latex modified thinset mortar to install your ceramic tiles over your vinyl subfloor.

Working over plywood subfloors can be very tricky, as well. Like vinyl floor surfaces, it is not advisable to install your ceramic tiles directly on to your plywood floor surface. Plywood flooring usually has a smooth surface, and easily warps when exposed to heat or moisture. Be sure that the wood is at least 1 and 1/8 inches thick and is reinforced and supported by an equally strong underlayment. Otherwise, your ceramic tiles will dislodge easily, or worse, break and need replacing. Plywood panel edges must be installed about one-fourth of an inch away from perimeter walls and door jambs, and fixtures and cabinetry. These are expansion gaps and should not be bridged with tiling mortar. To prevent moisture from damaging the plywood subfloor, use a waterproofing sealant or caulk over your plywood subsurface.

Concrete floors are the most ideal subfloor surface to work with. But before you start tiling over the subfloor surface, it must be cleaned thoroughly. Paint, adhesives, fillers or levelers, sealers, and chemically treated cement substrates are unsuitable surfaces fpr ceramic tile installations. Remove these by using non-chemical methods. For dust and other debris, sweep and then mop your concrete subfloor surface using only clean water. Allow the surface completely before you start working on it. Generally, smooth concrete surfaces are difficult to work with as the tiling mortar may not grip and hold. Consequently, your ceramic floor tiles may be in danger in dislodging. Smooth concrete surfaces must be rough sanded, scarified, or etched to allow the tiling mortar some grip.

Another important aspect about how to lay ceramic floor tile is to always check for cracks and debris. Repair as many of the cracks as you can. If you see cracks that are too large to repair, replace the floor section where they are found with new concrete. Concrete may need to set (or dry) for at least twenty-four hours before you can start tiling over it. Lastly, get out your carpenter’s level and check for any dips or humps on the concrete subfloor surface. If you find any, you may use a cement-based floor level to fill in the dips and smoothen over the humps. This will help to keep your finished ceramic tile floor level and minimize dislodging, or tile breakage.

Let it dry or set properly. This is the key step you need to keep in mind about how to lay ceramic floor tile flooring. There are three setting periods: The first is right after you have placed your ceramic tiles with thin set mortar and bonded them to your subfloor. The second is after after putting in your tiling grout (before putting on the sealant). These setting periods last overnight, at the very least, to twenty-four hours, at the most. Your sealant has dried, you are done!

So when you work on your own ceramic tile project, always remember how to lay ceramic floor tile properly by knowing how to work with your subfloor surfaces. Learning how to lay ceramic floor tile is also both a great way both to learn a new hobby, and a home improvement skill. Just remember to keep a safe working environment, not to rush things (especially during setting periods), and try to work with at buddy. Better yet, get your friends over and help.

Patrik Karlsson asked:

For creating indoor decorations, ceramic tiles are a great product to use. Ceramic Tiles can be used as covering floors and walls (witch is most common) or it can be used to cover chimneys etc. Painted and glazed, ceramic tiles have a high resistance to external factors, as they are not influenced by moisture or temperature variations, they are easy to clean and pretty cheap to install. Ceramic tiles are most commonly massed produced, but it can be customized and pretty unique in design.

Ceramic tiles seems pale and less valuable to natural stone tiles and because of that, the price is lower than the natural stone tiles. Since it cheaper, it is the number one choice for a lot of users. When installing ceramic tiles, you have to consider the thickness and if the tiles has an uneven surface. A thinner one needs more adhesive then a thicker one and if the ceramic floor tiles has an uneven surface, you can use a mortar to correct it and if has some higher spots, you can use very simple chisels moves. Another thing to think about is that its very slippery when wet.

To avoid of getting the tiles stained or too dirty and difficult to clean, make sure to seal the grout lines. If you do not do it, the tiles will become very difficult to clean and moisture has a chance to make its way true the ceramic tiles.

A great advantage of ceramic tiles is that it has even and easy to wash surface. Compare to natural stones, it is a huge different, since the natural stone models usually accumulate dirt in certain patterns. This advantage is the reason why public institution and medical facilities use ceramic tiles, since they need sterile and even structures.

Many years ago, ceramic tiles were used both in mural works and mosaic floorings. It was consider as luxury and their artistic use was more important then their practicality.

Look at Islamic tile work that clearly shows the versatile use of ceramic tiles; they are present in palaces, temples, public buildings and in the homes of upper class families. European cultures were influenced of the artistic tradition of Arab ceramic tiles patterns and used it as decorations in garden and courtyards. Tourists can still admire the beauty of such tile work in the Moorish remnants of Spain: at Malaga and Cordoba for instance; the mosaics are incredibly well preserved testifying once again for the durability of such ceramic structures.
