Cramer A asked:

About to lay new ceramic tile. Pulled up the old vinyl and much to my surprise the subfloor is 1 inch solid plywood! So I’m good there. The vinyl left behind a coat of the old glue, that ain’t going anywhere. Is it okay to lay right over this as long as it is pasted well to the floor, or do I have to try and somehow scape up all that old glue? The glue is flat and smooth, not lumpy, although still a bit tacky in spots.

I did ceramic in my basement last month and pulled up the old vinyl there. I used chemicals to remove the old vinyl glue and it was a REAL BTCCCCH to get up. So if this is an unnecessary step, then I would sure like to avoid this.

thanks

I’m not sure about the tacky part, I’ve never saw this happen with vinyl flooring glue. Try a heat lamp if possible and see if you can get the tacky part dry. Other than that there shouldn’t be a problem. In the spot where it is tacky are you sure this isn’t due to a water leak. If not then I’d say you’d be OK with this.

The floor now some glues are not suitable to smooth the thin set or to patch the thin set or to smooth the thin set or two.
The thin set or to patch the area depending on the thin set or to use thinset on the thin set or to patch the thin set or two.
