Shraddha Avasthi asked: Even though the ceramic material preparation involves complex manufacturing process and is costlier of all the sealing stuffs used, that could be glass, simple epoxy, rubber seals etc, but ceramics has its own advantage reason is to why being preferred for the sealing of materials, used in typical applications.
To name the few typical applications are:- Typically metal to ceramic assembly requires
ceramic seals; this assembly is used in various
capacitors, refractory, Implantable electronic devices, Aerospace applications, feedthroughs etc. Reason as to why ceramics is preferred is use of ceramic seals in the conditions where glass seals fail the high performance requirement.
Ceramic is ideal for Aerospace applications as it resisting thermal and mechanical shocks, and give excellent resistance against corrosion.
Another application for which its biocompatibility is highly desirable is medical implants, and therefore ceramics is being preferred for its tough resistance against acids and alkalis.
Not least in laser applications where dielectric properties are highly desirable against high voltage and high current.
Ceramic-to-metal seals are also recommended for the extreme high and low temperature conditions, as ceramic gives strong sealing and resistance in harsh conditions, even better than glass seals.
Another reason for its being preferred over glass is that
ceramics acts as an insulator at extreme temperature, and thermal shocks where glass normally starts acting as conductor.
Ceramics does not fracture and have high mechanical strength against vibrations and loads.
Ceramics also shows excellent acid and alkaline resistance, which is required feature for medical implants.
Aerospace application uses mettalized ceramics for its ability to stand against high temperature, vibrations, and mechanical shocks.
Many other applications are using its high resistance and insulation property in their assemblies.
